Introduction

PMP (Project Management Professional) is an internationally recognized professional appellation offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). PMPs are employed as ‘Project Managers’ by companies for improving the success rate of projects undertaken. A PMP certificate holder has a better chance of getting hired for top management posts & will be exposed to a more competitive and challenging working environment.

Prerequisites & eligibility

To be eligible for the certification exam, the following requirements have to be met:

• A secondary degree with:

1. Minimum 5 years or 60 months of professional project management experience
2. Spending 7,500 hours leading & monitoring projects
3. 35 hours of project management education

• A four year degree with:

1. Minimum 3 years or 36 months of professional project management experience
2. Spending 4,500 hours leading & monitoring projects
3. 35 hours of project management education

• NOTE: To maintain PMP credibility, one must earn 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every 3 years. PDUs can be earned through involvement in activities such as researching in the study area, writing articles, books etc. and engaging in full-time project management.

Exam structure

The test is available both as computer & paper based.

The test consists of 200 MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions) with 4 options out of which one is incorrect. Out of the 200 questions given, only 175 are considered while evaluating the score. The rest 25 are pre-release questions (these questions are randomly distributed among all the other questions. If a majority, or very few of the candidates answer a question right, then that question will be considered as a pre-test question & will not be considered for evaluation).

The test duration is 4 hours.

Results for computer based test are given immediately upon completion of the test, & the results for paper-based test are released nearly 4 weeks after the completion of the exam.

Fee structure

The examination fee is 555 USD for non-PMI members & 405 USD for PMI members. The application fee is 10 USD.

PMI membership costs 129 USD per year. Student PMI membership is also available for the students of recognized universities for 32 USD per year. Retiree membership (65 USD/year) can be opted by those who have worked for 5 consecutive years, but are presently in retirement from active employment.
